The eagle on every Moto Guzzi tank is a memorial. The eagle on every Moto Guzzi tank is a memorial.

Three guys in an Italian naval air squadron made a plan during the First World War: when this ends, we build motorcycles. One of them, Giovanni Ravelli, died in a test flight in 1919. The other two built the company anyway and put their squadron's eagle on the tank.

Piaggio invited me out to Mandello del Lario for the opening of the new factory and museum, and I came home with a different opinion of this brand.

They've been building bikes behind the same red gate since 1921. On Lake Como, at the bottom of some of the most technical roads I've ridden all year.

Along the way they built a wind tunnel in a town of 9,000 people, a 500cc V8 that did 177 mph in 1957, and police bikes for the LAPD.

Look, I spent most of my life dismissing Moto Guzzi. Nice engine, wrong bike. Then I rode a V85 and a Stelvio up the hairpins above the lake, and it clicked.

The full story is on YouTube now.

Which Guzzi would be in your garage?
