Dave, I did'nt get to say thanks. You and your group made the whole class great. It really was fun. I learned alot about riding and about myself. I would recomend the ST ART class to anyone. On the ride home I thought of so many more questions, I would love to bend your ear sometime. Again, thanks to you all. Mike.

Hey there. Just wanted to thank you for your site. My best friend & I have known each other since jr. high, and have been talking about motorcycle touring since high school. We both turn 41 this year, haven't lived in the same place since high school, so when he moved up here a year ago, we decided we had to get sport bikes. I bought mine in Dec, he 2 weekends ago. I got a '98 CBR F3, he got a '95 VFR 750. We've been reading your site "cover to cover" all winter, and are buying our tires and bags based on your reviews. We're also planning a couple of rides around your Treasure Maps. Thanks again for the great information. Maybe we'll see you out there.

Hey guys.. Wonder if you would be willing to offer some insight based on your experience. I am about to buy a bike after not riding for about 20 years. Used to ride motocross and cross county, and have waivered recently between cruiser, sport tourer and naked street bike. At this point, my top two choices are VFR Inceptor (2007) and Triumph (1050 engine in either Tiger, Sprint, or Speed Triple). What might you offer in terms of advice/insight to someone like me? Any other bikes you might consider. I realize the subjectivity of this question, but have enjoyed your website and would appreciate your thoughts. Can be reached at hjronan@mindspring.com.... Thanks - Harry

I received a NT 650 as a barter payment for cleaning a shed. With the price of gas nowadays 50 miles to the gallon is the ticket. I enjoy riding in the winter...just not on the ice. As you mentioned most do not belive that it is a 20 year old bike, aluminum frame..single sided swingarm and all. The bike only had 2014 or so miles on it..barely broke in. Of course most of the rubber components were dry rotted and had to be replaced..hoses, tires and all. Rebuilt the carbs..a new pair Of Michelin Pilot Roads a few light bulbs, polishing and BAM! On The Road! Maybe not a 1/4 miler but beautiful handling through the corners. As an 1973ish AAMMRR and AFM Road Racer I love the bike, cruising throught the back horse country roads in MD is a pleasure. God Bless you all!

Just read about Kris's duc. Love the blue What kind of luggage does she recomend? I just bought a Nelson Rigg mini tail bag that I don't have yet (Christmas present). I'm wondering how their small saddlebags would be and how they would mount up with the grab handles where they are. Asking this because I saw alot of Nelson Rigg stuff in some of your pictures. Great Site! Just wanted to add to your review of Idaho SR12 Lolo Pass. You can extend this route further by starting in Lewiston. First take a run up and back down the spiral highway (old Lewiston Grade), short but spectacular. Then hit Hwy 12 east along the (clearwater?) river. Then up and over Lolo Pass. I did this on my Ducati ST4s 2 summers ago and I was giddy all day long! Happy Trails!

Hi Guys, just wanted to thank you for your excellent review of the Conti SportAttack tyres. I have been looking for new tyres for my 98 cbr 600, and after reading your review i decided to go for the conti's. for the 1st 50 km i was thinking i had made a huge mistake, the bike felt so different. After a day of spirited riding i am now in love with the tyres, as i got used the the feel of the tyres i found myself hiting corners harder and harder, and loving how planted the bike felt. Thanks again.

Great site, I enjoyed your road test on tires and purchased some Conti Road Atacks on your recomendation. I have had good luck with them so far. I rida a Buell and my rear shock went out, they wanted a lot of money for a new one, but I found a place in Calif. Aftershocks which rebuilt and revalved it for me. I am very happy with there work and would like to reccomend them to any one else who has shock or fork problems.

Heya, glad you enjoyed BC.. Next time come farther west and take the REALLY big ferries to Vancouver Island and , you will flip at the awesome roads and cool little towns. Cross back back over on a FAIRLY big ferry to the mainland from Comox(an air force base town) to Powell River and one more SORTA big ferry to Earl's Cove and there.. you will find the most artistically and "painted by the hand of God himself" road I've personally ever ridden upon. Twisty and perfect, unblemished and no increasing radius' that I could discern(that means go for it.. no surprises). And pretty much devoid of rolling tin cans. Too short, but VERY sweet and ohhh so scenic. Stop at the Grasshopper pub in Pender Harbour.. There's tons of spots you'd want to stop and soak in the scenery- mountains rising out of the sea, fjords and pristine little lakes- but the Pub's view is awesome and you'll have loads of biker company. The Harley dudes up there are the same carbon copy types as anywhere I guess, what with their heavy chrome and lack of cornering clearance making them pissed off at their decision to buy a bike based on social concerns over performance, but they're nicer than the typical city-harley-yuppie and are there for the same reason-almost-as the metric crowd... Cause the Sunshine Coast/Vancouver Island experience is some damn good times on 2 wheels. Peace.

Excellent review on the Conti Road Attack. I currently have Dunlop D616's on my 06' Buell Uly that I bought June 2007. At about 3600 miles the rear tire may have about another 1000 miles usable tread wear left on it. After reading your review I am sold on the Conti Road Attacks. After several trips up the Beartooth Pass, across the Chief Joseph and Sunlight Basin Hwys., these chip sealed roads can really grind a tire down, even if your not an aggresive rider like myself. Thanks for the info. Joe S.

Barged into your website while rooting round the web in search of my old racing pal Walt Fulton III. Forward this to him if you can so we can be in contact again for the first time since Cotati in 1968, ha. Me and my pal Yoshi on a "widowmaker" Kaw Mach III and Walt on a Iforgetwhat, headed up into the Sierra foothills: Walt's comment afterwards, looking at Yoshi, was "I wouldn't ride behind myself going like that." All these years I've pondered that statement. How indeed could you ride behind yourself, Walt. (snicker) Haven't kilt myself yet (or anybody else, almost), by the way. Still riding crazy, having absquatulated from the US to Canada to Japan to Thailand to Indonesia. It's the end of the road here: ZXR-750RR and TZR-250s, nyaaa.

Wish I had found this site before my spring trip! Due to weather turning nasty in TX and NM, we left ND and headed across WY to Utah for our ride to the Southwest. We had never been there before, but it was some of the best riding we had on the whole trip of nearly 4000 miles. We spent the first night in Heber City, then headed down Provo Canyon (wow!) then hit 89 and stayed with that all the way to the south end of the state. Utah offers some really beautiful riding and sights (Bryce Canyon is totally unbelievable!). Will definately come back when the weather is just a bit warmer. You folks are so lucky to live in such great riding country!

I checked and we make three references to Mormons on CanyonChasers.net 1) when one of my closest friends, a return missionary, accidentially knocked over a six-pack of beer and we all laughed about it. 2) We passed through the town of Mormon Bar, California and thought it ironic because Mormons do not drink. 3) The legend of the Mormon Crickets and the Seagulls. We live in Utah and love living in Utah, many who ride with us are Mormons. I assure you, there is absolutely no ill will.

After adding these Continental tires to my bike, I began having a shudder in my front end durring mid range braking. I can not feel it in the lever, and because it's only in the mid range and not durring light or heavy braking, I don't think it's the rotors,. Could it be the tire, or what else?

This site has made my cold, rainy winter bearable! I too have a Speed Triple, (my second!) and was looking to do heated grips when I stumbled upon your workshop section, great! I already added an accessory block as per your guide, and am waiting for the heaters to show so i can hook them up. I did fry my little Garmin Legend somehow but thats another story. You've confirmed what some of us already knew, Speed Triples are great for touring too! Keep up the good work!

You guys rool. The information on your site, both technical and non-techie, are commendable. The page on installing auxillary fuse box was helpful when I did mine last weekend. Assigning myself the End-of-Life goal to chase canyons on this continent, I empathize andd enjoy your site. Even though I ride a Wee-strom customized for adventure touring ;) There are canyons here in Texas. If you ever want information, maps or reviews, drop me an email. Found your site really useful and in particular the page on how to set up a 'Power relay Distribution block' and thought I would have a go at setting it up on my Blackbird. Only one problem....I can not find a supplier of a 'dual post distribution block' here in the UK. A google search for "6 post dual pair block" only came up with one reference to it.....Yours. I still think it's a great set up and when I figure out a way to get round the distributer block problem I'll be on my way. email: nitenurse@ntlworld.com

I just wanted to say your site is inspirational. The bond that you guys have formed is palpable and it really shines through your presentation... How does one become an Honorary "Canyon Chaser"? I live, and breathe for the twisty roads. In Illinois, you have to go 2hrs away before you get to anything twisty, so one is almost forced to become a sport-tourer if one wants to ride on the street... But that's all a part of the allure of a motorcycle I guess... Thanks for sharing your experiences, and for the wonderful technical write-ups. They are very helpful!!

Just thought I would thank you for the review of the Conti-attacks and suggestion of the heated grips. I went with the road attacks myself and I can't say one bad thing about them. I too have ridden on a lot of different tires, and never found "that tire" I knew I would buy over and over again. These tires simply are the best I have had under me to date. The grips, after years and hundreds of dollars on gloves, why did I wait so long? Add a vest and I might not ever be home. Me and my daily ridden CBR954 are very happy. Thanks again. Keith

Like your site. I ride a '90 Hawk 650 GT (700 cc with suspension mods) throughout NY, NJ and CT. 250 mile days are Sat/Sun norms. Commute about 25 miles when weather is nice. BDC's are abbundant in the city and they diminish about 25 miles outside NYC with NJ excepted. I am 6'1" and 180 lbs. I rode GS 500 and GSF 400 Bandit on BRP. 2000 mile weeks with lots of fun. Great review on ContiRoadAttack. I've just installed them on my 2005 Z750S and couldn't be happier. Also installed grip heaters following your instructions, only wished I'd had them sooner. Mine came with a great compact round rocker switch that looks factory. Also, for $12 from Walmart you can get a 20 amp relay, fuse holder, and wiring harness made for driving lights; works great for the heated grips project. Love the site, keep up the great writing between the great rides.

Just browsing for my second set of Cotinental's awesome Road Attack tires & saw the link to your review. It's right on and I feel they are the best tires I've had on my Futura. I wanted a tire with great grip but as I ride a good deal 2-up with the wife and daily commute to work I wanted good wear also. This tire is it! On my semi-secret roads west of Madison, WI they stick like glue even when pushed to my personal pucker limits on patched, bumpy pavement. Your site is great. There's a lot of useful information without all the hype and it's well organized and easy to navigate. I've never left feedback like this before but felt like I wanted to do it for you guys and let you know I appreciate all the effort you put into the site. Ride fast, ride safe! Mike

Hello to you all, I just read your report on Michelin Pilot Road tyres. My Suzuki SV 1000 is still on its first set of tyres at 2,200 miles and I'd been wondering how long they'd last, bearing in mind that I'm now 48, riddled with arthritis and tend to ride pretty sensibly nowadays. Thanks very much for your excellent review, I had been considering a change to Metzeler Roadtec Z6 next time but if I can get about 6,000 out of my current Michelins I'll probably stick with these instead as I only cover a couple of thousand miles per year now. Yeah, getting old and stiff but it rains here an awful lot and modern Suzukis corrode just as bad as the old 70's two stroke twins and triples used to do so I try to take the bike out only when it's dry until the summer comes round again. Best regards, Mike

Great site guys (and Gals)! I can't believe how much gear you place on the back of those sports bikes! Being and ex sports biker and now cruiser convert I am staggered that you can keep the front wheel on the ground. There is one photo in your trip to Canada album where someone has a full size suitcase strapped on the rear end!! Still I guess you get great mileage out of the front tyre! Keep up the great work and I will keep checking your site - fully expecting to see that suitcase acting as a wheelie bar in the next set of photos!

reading your site about spped kills. Here in the UK a study was done into the cause of accidents on roads. They found: 6% were alcohol related 15% were people going to fast 1% were people falling asleep at the wheel. This means that 78% of accidents are caused by Sober, correct speed driving, fully awake people. What does that say then.

Came across your website while looking at the USBA site. The racing at Larry Miller's new track sounds interesting, but riding canyons and other beautiful roads with like minded individuals sounds much better. Made a circle through Price, Grand Staircase, Panguitch, Milford, Delta, and home this last summer and it was good. How do you let others that might be interested in joining you know when you are heading out? Do you do any weekend rides around local canyons? Let me know if you get to Tooele County, we have some great roads south and west from here. Ride safe.

I was able to find one at Sears/Craftsman for about $19usd. It seems to be of high quality and is also a good fit. I had found the metric equivalent on motorcycle sites for as much as $50usd and up. Hey guys and girls, I spent the whole day today on your CanyonChasers site, reading trip reports and looking at pictures. Yours is one of the best riding sites I've found so far! I especially enjoyed the Laguna Seca 2005 trip because I used to ride out there every year when I lived in Las Vegas, 1983-1985, then once more in the early 90's when I lived in Montana. I have a few suggestions for your Packing List :) Along with the ID and credit cards, might I suggest adding your Driver's License, Registration, and Proof of Insurance to the list? :) Take care, and keep riding safely.

Two bike grrl. '77' HD XLCR Cafe Racer, '66' restored Sporty. Thanks for a GREAT riding site. I ran across it while researching the SIGMA bike computers being used on motorcycles. The '66' needed a small, accurate and inconspicous speedo, and the SIGMA is just the thing for this kitty's toy. There is also a small (read as tiny) LED light for the SIGMA's as well. Approx 30 hr. batt. life, and no 12v wiring needed, no bulbs for the old ironhead to rattle into useless submission. Branford Bike, REI, Jensen USA and Ryson have all/most of the SIGMA's and their accessories. While there are no canyons in Fl. there is a lot of wonderful coastal and inland riding. The west coast and points close by to the east are best The east coast is a bloody parking lot and drastically urbanishly uninteresting. If you ever plan to visit Fl drop a line.. Remember... Good bad grrls ride black.. *grin* Thanks again, and keep the sticky side down!

I just read your trip report from SLC to Varnal and back. It's too bad you didn't wander further down 40 as you eventually run into some of the baddest switchbacks I've ever come across. Ok, the only since I'm from the midwest. But anyways, it's nice to see places mentioned I now know from my trip just last week as well. Anyways, check out a bit of the report at: http://pengaru.com/~troll/utah2005 Thanks!

Came across your site while looking for touring pictures Have to say its so refreshing to find out that theres guys(and gals) like you over in the States, it seems to us in rainy england that the only riders over there are badass dudes or stunt monkeys, but I guess we are wrong, there are good bike riders over there who ride for the love of the roads , the ride, and the camaraderie Ive ridden most of Europe myself either alone or with groups and reading your site is like reading reports of some of our trips Maybe my next trip will have to be over there and you guys should definately come over here and try some of the Alpine Cols (mountain passes) Ride safe and keep it rubber side down Some snaps from our last Pyrenees trip can be found here http://photobucket.com/albums/a261/krustyfazer/?start=0

Thanks for the great web site. I'm traveling to SLC this weekend to attend a Ride for Kids event there http://www.ride4kids.org/saltlakecity/index.htm and was looking for a road to ride. Your "SR35 | WolfCreek Pass | from Woodland to Hanna" sounds like exactly what I was looking for. Perhaps I'll run into some Canyon Chasers along the way. TINK

Only "re-aquired" a bike three weeks ago and just took a little 50 mile round trip with the wife. Either we trade up to a Road Star or we get better seats! So there you go. See ya on the road!

I lived in Ogden & Echo from '81-83; worked graveyard at th Kozy Cafe in Echo; bought my first motorcycle---a "new" 2-tear-old Yamaha SR500 (another delight) while in Utah; I abandoned it, kinda ratted, at a friend's home & left th state... after returnin to Virginia (an findin another "new" 3-year-old Yamaha SR500 here!) I spotted my first live Hawk: with HD friends on th Blue Ridge Parkway & I made such a scene when it passed that th rider thought us in distress an rode back to us; I dig Hawks! in th mid-90s, I traded a Radian to th local Yamaha dealer's service manager for a '89 Honda Hawk with full Two Brothers ragalia Dunlop BattleAx on both ends beautiful clipons an bar ends with some fancy RC mirrors thrown in should I decide to stickem on that TB full fairin that made th bike seem cooler but feel hotter---I always wanted a "racebike" an now that I had one AND had gotten pulled for th first time ever on the Blue Ridge Parkway---I stripped th bike of th windowdressin but the left-side header-exhaust stayed BECAUSE IT REALLY MAKES THAT 'yer wheel's gonna fall off'-look SO OBVIOUS; I left th clipons below th tripletree to create THE most-uncomfortable bike I have ever owned or ridden BUT th guy that turned me on to bikes was a Britophile so I knew "cafe" an th "cowboy" feelin I got alone on those Wasatch Front twisties make me leave those bars down there---besides as they say: if you' know you're uncomfortable--- you're goin too slow. In th late 90s, some workmates walked up to my luchtable---grinnin---an shoved a FOR SALE column in my face an that wekend, my returned-from-Deseret-Brit-bike-ridin friend an I rode out an I bought myself another Hawk. a two-previous-owners sweetthing with 20,000+ miles : box stock I bought my father's mother's home "on th poor side" where this family's been for 65-years now an built a board&batten shed in th back where await : one street-ready SR, two street-ready Hawks---plain or fancy---, & a 73 75/5 BMW; still have that first Single in there, too... about th BMW : when I was in 12th grade, my Brit-bike buddy's brother, also a senior, bought this bike from th original owner; he kept it until 81 an called his brother who was then livin in Utah an axt if he wanted th BMW; so we & his wife-to-be loaded my first Single onto a truck an drove to Virginia to pickup bike; 9 years later, I'm livin in VA an I get a fonecall; my Brit-bike-lovin/BMW-ownin buddy wants to know if I want th BMW! I talk a friend about a trailer an my girlfriend about a roadtrip an I return to UT an buy that HOTwin an turn around an come home... that Britophile has moved across town an wants his Bavarian back...when I die OR if he puts that Norton together---maybe. dig Hawks; keep it mostly upright...wish I had had a Hawk in my Utah days!

Just found your site today. Nice job! I've got a Triumph Sprint RS, and much of what you say about the Speed Triple applies to the RS as well. The motor is simply brilliant! P.S. to John Edwards who posted on 2005-05-16 - Go down to southwest Missouri and seach out Hwy 125 - it's the best road I've ever ridden anywhere! Look for it running north/south @ 20 miles east of Branson.

Excellent site, have ridden thru CO, WY, MT. Bear Tooth Pass was so much fun, rode it four times. It's fun to pass those lumbering HD big twins in the mountains on a Buell S3 w/a Vance & Hines muff - they know you've got a twin - it just rides and handles a whole lot better than theirs -and gets 45 mpg doing it

Hi Dave & Gang, I've visited your site lots over last few years and really enjoyed reading about all your trips. Reminds me of the riding I did back in the 80's on my 750 Seca. Great Site. Great Photos. My riding is mostly through the flatlands and swamps of south Louisiana. It is about a ten-hour ride to either the Smokey Mountains (Deals Gap) or the Texas Hill Country. We do have some good racing and a World Class Motorcycle Museum six hours away in Birmingham, AL. Barber Motorsports Park.

I am current president of Gospel Wheels, the CMA chapter in San Jose, CA. We have several venus that have been opened up to us to go where the sportbikers are. We have two great tracks that are somewhat local, Laguna Seca and Infineon (Sears Point). We have AMA races at both these tracks once a year. This year have the previledge of the Moto GP at Laguna Seca in July. CMA is volunteering a Helmet and gear check in locations and opportunities are opening up to our fellow riders. I currently have a Ninja EX250, Suzuki Bandit 1200S, BMW K1200LT and K1100LT and a Kawasaki KLR650, along with these is a chinese knock off CT-70 for a pit bike. I read Dave's article sent to CMA. Thank you for your article, I hope that it reaches and touches the hearts of all CMAers, and opens their eyes to these wonderful opportunity to reach out.

Just wanted to let you know that I was on the fence about buying a Triumph S3 and was looking for review to help me decision. I came across your review of the S3 and decided to take the leap. I'm so glad I did! I'm 42 years old and not the cruiser kind. I have been on sport bike my whole life but was looking for something that a could still have fun on but not be shunned by my fellow HD riders. Triumph S3 was the answer.
